Rite Aid’s Derrick Shaffer and Clarissa Sullivan Take Home Top Category Management Awards
At its annual Supplier Conference, held in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Rite Aid recognized the outstanding contributions of its Category Management teams and announced the winners of the 2016 Category Manager of the Year and Associate Category Manager of the Year awards.
Ken Martindale, CEO of Rite Aid stores and president of Rite Aid Corporation, and Senior Vice President of Marketing John Learish joined Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Distribution Tony Montini in presenting the awards.
Rite Aid’s 2016 Category Manager of the Year is Derrick Shaffer, who oversees household chemical, paper products, As Seen on TV, dollar shop, plastic bags, pet care, and household cleaning. Montini, who presented the award, stated that Shaffer, who delivered an impressive 3.4 percent sales increase over last year and a 4.7 percent improvement in margin dollars, is a true competitor in every sense of the word.
“Derrick wins with his largest and most impactful supplier partners to drive growth and margin,” said Montini. “He pays tremendous attention to detail as evidenced by his category and product reviews, and also provided strong leadership and training to a new Associate Category Manager during the year.”
Finalists for Category Manager of the Year included Diane Ober, who oversees vitamins, GNC, diet, adult nutrition and nutritional bars; and Brian Shanahan, manager of warehouse grocery, warehouse snacks, DSD snacks and ice cream.
Clarissa Sullivan was named Associate Category Manager of the Year for her “consistency, support and dedication” in the automotive, hardware, lightbulbs, garden live goods and seasonal categories.
“Clarissa readily volunteers to take on new and different tasks and is sought out by her peers for her guidance and coaching,” said Montini. “She never fails to jump in and help others when the need arises and is a perfect role model for other associate category managers.”
The finalists for Associate Category Manager of the Year included Kathy Delorenzo, who manages eye care, first aid, foot care, family planning, feminine hygiene, home health care and emergency contraceptives; and Rebecca Hannon, assistant category manager for DSD snacks, warehouse grocery, warehouse snacks and ice cream.
